How will you spend your time?
I am grateful for the opportunity to go into work every day and dive into a lot of work that I feel is very important. That said, I often find myself reminding myself and others that our lives encompasses so much more than the work we do.
One of the things I’ve encouraged my team to participate in is to draw data visualizations on our whiteboard in the office. It doesn’t have to be perfect — it can be anything from the mundane to quirky or things that excite them.
In the beginning of January, I came into the office contemplating the time we have and so I decided to consider what a healthy lifestyle might look like. 8 hours of sleep is optimal and ideally, we should do as much deep work as possible within the 7.5 hours a day that we are allotted. Of course, there are people out there who work more than those number of hours.
My point is really when we think about how much time we spend sleeping and working every year. As a template for time to start with:
1/3 of our year is meant for a healthy amount of sleep.
1/5 of our year is meant for good work.
What do we do with the rest of that time? How do we spend that time which is now almost a form of currency in this age of competition for attention?
